Every culture is originated and defined by a process of interaction: between the individuals of a community and between them and the environment they inhabit. In the relationship of mutual confrontation between humans, the exchange concerns the set of values, symbols, conceptions, beliefs, behavior models, as well as the products of material activities that characterize the identity of the specific social group or community. This complex process of osmotic relationships constitutes a dynamic universe in continuous expansion and constant redefinition that deserves to be explored.

The Osmotic Narratives workshop, through the exercise of design thinking practices, intends to refer to this cosmos of intercultural interactions by focusing on their narrative content, in an attempt to define and better understand their distinctive characteristics. Research is favored and stimulated by the context in which it takes place: in the spaces of the MAO – Museum of Oriental Art of Turin, an extraordinary pole of study, contact and comparison with the world of Asian cultures, the workshop finds the suitable environment for the analysis and didactic-training experiments that have always distinguished IN Residence’s activities.

Grace Prince (UK, 1992) is a furniture designer based in Zürich, Switzerland. Prince’s work explores the poetics of fragile gestures harnessed in functional design, without the use of ready-mades, each element is formed from her hand or in close collaboration with an artisan, a slow sensory process with the perceptive outcome of speed and chance. Parallel to her practice she works as a researcher for the chair of Prof. Anne Holtrop, ETHZ, design studio: Material Gesture. She was selected as one of the AD100 top designers for 2023.

Anna Resei (Austria, 1989) is a conceptual designer based in Hamburg, Germany. She creates functional and abstract interior objects that explore our relationship with the material world. Anna graduated cum laude from Design Academy Eindhoven with a master in Contextual Design (2021) and was a finalist of the 15th Design Parade Hyères. Her works have been nominated for the young talent award ein&zwanzig as part of the German Design Council. During the period of the “OSMOTIC NARRATIVES” workshop, the Designer-Tutors and the curators of the project are the leaders in an experience of total collaboration, a discussion that continues beyond the work sessions and extends into moments of leisure time. Dialogue and interaction, together with hands-on activities of experimentation, are the prioritized tools with which the workshop delves into the creative process.
