IT IS: ROBERTO SIRONI

Tradition

The term “tradition” comes from the Latin tràdere, “to deliver.” As a designer I have the duty, but also the privilege, of coming to grips with the historical legacy of knowledge and memories of various territories – seen as specific geo-cultural nuclei – and of “delivering” that knowledge through design.
Thanks to its narrative component, design is a very powerful took with which to reinterpret and re-signify material and immaterial traditions, to continue to describe what must not be lost. For me, the design of the future is always based on the absorption of the past.

Invention

In my practice, rather than invention one might talk about creation, a term that also links to the subjective sphere. I believe that my creations – which are the translation in projects of my personal discoveries – have value even if they are not materially owned. Through exhibitions and books, or simply through coverage on a website, all my research projects and small discoveries can be shared and thus utilized. I think the concept of invention – or creation – takes on meaning only when there is sharing of discovery, be it scientific, artistic or specific to design.

Sharing

For me, sharing is engagement. My practice focuses on exploration of themes pertaining to the anthropological and archaeological sphere, and on the parallel experimentation with techniques and materials. One of the objectives of my practice is to spread awareness of the research I conduct, and therefore to contribute – within the limits of my possibilities – to the spread of knowledge. Sharing the results of research through projects, I always try to transmit a series of stimuli to people, in the hope that they can trigger subsequent personal investigation.

Responsibility

To be responsible means developing only projects that have an intrinsic value based on research. To assume responsibility also means being aware of the fact that all projects have an ecological impact, which is determined by the sum of the design choices. Today we know that sending an email or publishing a post can also have an ecological impact, so the theme is to try to make the best choices possible with the aim of limiting that impact, seeking a point of balance and mediation between the forces involved.
