“METABOLIC SCENARIOS”
Designer-tutors:
JOHANNA SEELEMANN
NICOLAS ZANONI
When:
12 –15 January, 2026
Where:
MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome
METABOLIC SCENARIOS
Metabolic Scenarios presents a deliberately open-ended theme of exploration and speculative investigation, aimed at generating research hypotheses within the urban context. The title invites us to perceive the city as a dynamic field of forces, a living organism in a state of constant transformation, where every space holds traces of memory and every community acts as a vector capable of reshaping its form – its very substance.
The term Metabolic refers to that which absorbs, transforms, regenerates: a continuous flow in which past and present intertwine to generate often unexpected futures. Scenarios opens up a horizon of multiple visions, where design – and the actions of designers – give shape to intuitions, omens, and artifacts that tell stories of new ways of living and coexisting.
The workshop becomes a space of possibilities, a place where imagination engages with different material hypotheses to translate urban complexity into poetic, tangible signs, capable of speaking to vital change.
JOHANNA SEELEMANN
Johanna Seelemann (1990, Leipzig, Germany) is a designer whose practice examines everyday objects through a forensic, multidisciplinary lens. Educated in Iceland and the Netherlands, she founded her design studio in 2020 and now works between Leipzig and Reykjavík. Her work explores material culture, production systems, and ecological cycles, using research into supply chains and material languages to propose alternative, future-oriented design perspectives. Moving fluidly between product design, conceptual research, and strategy, her projects highlight ideas of substitution, adaptation, and resilience. Seelemann’s work has been shown internationally at institutions including the Design Museum London, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and Villa Noailles. She has received awards and recognitions such as the Green Concept Award (2022), Dezeen’s Emerging Designer of the Year shortlist (2023), and inclusion by Wallpaper as a future creative leader. In 2025, her work was nominated for the Icelandic Design Award, Dutch Design Awards Emerging Talent Award, and Ralph Saltzman Prize.

NICOLAS ZANONI
Nicolas Zanoni (1995, Paris, France) is a French designer of Argentinian origin whose work challenges conventional contemporary design. Favoring irregularity, intuition, and hands-on experimentation, he creates functional objects that blur the boundary between design and sculpture. After earning a Master’s in Industrial Design at La Cambre in Belgium, he devoted himself to exploring materials and reinterpreting everyday objects with playful, poetic sensibilities. Working with industrial materials like polystyrene and aluminum, Zanoni pushes their limits through weaving, melting, stacking, burning, and shaping. His instinctive, analogue methods produce organic forms, often shaped by accidents and the materials’ own logic. Zanoni’s signature “trickery”, simple yet transformative manipulations of a single material, and the recurring use of woven or pressed aluminum define his visual and tactile language. Though sculptural in appearance, his objects remain functional, inviting interaction and fostering intimate connections between user and object, transforming everyday encounters into unique, personal experiences.

Workshop
During the period of the “METABOLIC SCENARIOS” workshop, the designer-tutors and the curators of the project are the leaders in an experience of total collaboration, a discussion that continues beyond the work sessions and extends into moments of leisure time. Dialogue and interaction, together with hands-on activities of experimentation, are the prioritized tools with which the workshop delves into the creative process.
