Protoplasting Nature: Encoded Symbols

The exhibition “Protoplasting Nature: Encoded Symbols” displays seven lighting fixtures, unique pieces conceived and designed by Marcin Rusak as a result of his design research developed as part of IN Residence Design Residency #1.

During his experience in Turin, Marcin Rusak was inspired by the collection of the Museo Egizio, and in particular by the Thaumatococcus Daniellii plant – a rhizomatic herb widely cultivated in central Africa, whose evolution has been historically planned and controlled by man. The work “Protoplasting Nature: Encoded Symbols” concentrates on the creation of a series of light sources, in which the organic matter – exactly as in the ritual of mummification – is treated to be conceptually suspended in an indefinite intermediate state of balance between life and death.

Such artifacts fall within the conceptual category of “utensils of interpretation”, where the symbolic dimension also represents their dominant or prevalent functional aspect, thus lending themselves as being used as devices to decipher specific categories of symbolic codes.

The show took place at Carwan Gallery in Athens from January 21st until March 27th, 2021.
