INTRA-TEMPORALITY

The impact – above all cultural in nature – of technological evolution on society is changing the behavioral habits of individuals, in keeping with also radical variations that force our biorhythms to take on characteristics of dynamic variability. The subjection of vital rhythmical cycles to constant disturbance can influence our perception of time in a significant way; the trend towards a progressive and apparently irreversible acceleration of our lives forces us to value time as an increasingly precious resource.

What would happen if we were able to detect pockets of supplementary temporality amidst the folds of the single “current” moment? How could we exploit the availability of these additional fractions of time? Can Design Thinking develop a useful strategy to multiply these atoms of temporality recouped or created from scratch?

Furthermore: how can the designed objects we use function as devices of detection and application – or new formation – of these segments of extra-time we might indicate as particles of “intra-temporality”?

Context

Vienna Design Week is Austria´s largest design festival, with a variety of locations and events in Vienna. The event coordinated by Lilli Hollein reached its 12th iteration this year. Opening up creative processes and granting space for experimentation on site are core elements of the festival concept.

Welcome and introduction to the theme of the workshop by Barbara Brondi, Marco Rainò and the In Residence team.

10:30 am – 12:30 pm (Lecture Room)
Designers’ lectures: ideas, experiments, visions in relation to the general theme. Each guest designer will present and describe his/her own work and design process in a lecture of 45 minutes. All participants are invited to ask questions at the end of each presentation, to stimulate debate and discussion on specific topics.

The workshop will investigate the process that brings ideas into the design of an object. One group of 20 participants (divided into four groups of five people), applying the guidelines set by two guest designers, will come up with a concept concerning the given general theme “Intra-Temporality” that will be analyzed and developed into drawings and simple models or experiments. The aim is to establish an open dialogue between participants and designers, stimulating active confrontation within a notion of design geared more towards producing visions than forms. There is no obligation to come up with an object at the end of the two-day workshop. The only material that will be used at the workshop is everything that is available in a stationary store. All material will be provided by the IN Residence staff.

In the afternoon the four groups will work on a digital presentation about their research, conducted by one representative of each group during the public presentation in the late afternoon.

17:00 pm – 18:00 pm (Lecture Room)
The two guest designers will present a selection of their most recent works, their personal sources of inspiration, and unveil the procedures that characterize the approach towards the planning process in a brief lecture of approximately 15 minutes each in a meeting open to general public. After that, a representative of each of the four groups will present a slideshow to the audience, explaining the research developed during the workshop.

Farewell toast with the designers, participants and people involved in the project.

The organization reserves the right to make changes to the calendar and to the program of the workshop for the best performance of the same. Any changes will be communicated to the participants beforehand.

Eligibility

Participation is open to design professionals, students of any level, and enthusiasts in the field of design practice. People who are interested in pioneering design research and crossovers between design and other social, scientific and philosophical areas of interest. All participants must be over 18 years of age and have written and oral fluency in the English language.

Language

The workshop will be conducted in English.

Application And Deadlines

The workshop is open to up to maximum of 20 participants. You can book your place directly on our website, in a very simple process, selecting the billing method and accepting the Terms and Conditions.

Scholarship

CEDIT – Ceramiche d’Italia and Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH, provide for the most deserving students a total of 10 scholarships, to cover the enrollment costs of the workshop.
The scholarship do not include travel and accommodation costs.

The scholarships will be awarded at the end of the selections, and the selected participants will be contacted via email by September 20th, 2018.

Fees

The IN Residence workshop requires a fee of 750€ for general admission, with a special discount price of 500€ for students. Lunch during the four days of the workshop is provided by IN Residence and included in the participation fee (please advise if you have any food allergies by writing to info@inresidence-design.com). Student discounts are available only for individuals who meet the requirements by providing proof of student status (valid student ID) at info@inresidence-design.com before booking. Fees do not include travel or accommodation costs.

Terms and conditions

Applicants are requested to pay their participation fee before September 22, 2018. Cancellation policy: 50€ will be withheld for every cancellation to cover organizational costs. A penalty fee of 200€ is applied (in addition to the 50€ deposit) for every cancellation submitted starting one month prior to the first day of the workshop. Cancellations starting 2 weeks prior to the start date of the workshop will not be eligible for any reimbursement. The registered individual has the option of naming a substitute to attend in his/her place without any penalty fee.

Insurance

Each participant is responsible for arranging sufficient insurance coverage for the duration of the workshop: accident, liability and health insurance for travel abroad including evacuation, and theft insurance for personal effects. The organizer is not liable for any costs or damages. For all its offered courses and initiatives, the organizer shall not be liable for any damages to people or property caused by sovereign acts of any government, acts of nature or third parties.

Visa Requirements

Participants who require a visa are responsible for obtaining it with the correct timing.

Equipment

All the materials required for the workshop will be provided by IN Residence. Participants need to bring only their own laptops. Please ensure that this equipment is covered by your own insurance, as the organization (IN Residence and Vienna Design Week) takes no responsibility for items lost or stolen during the workshop.
