The first edition offers an analysis regarding the concepts of “nature” and “artifice”, trying to identify the specific characteristics of the two terms in relation to the “thinking” and “producing” that go into design.
Is it possible to reach the natural through the artificial? What kind of relation and mutual influence exists between what we consider nature and what we perceive as artificial? Can design contribute to encoding the implied meanings of this relationship? More specifically, how can we interpret, represent and express the surroundings intended as natural process through which the planning project generates stylistic devices? Finally, the nature of the planner is still, as in the past, a referral a suggestion, something that imitates and from which to take example or inspiration?
The possible answers to these and other questions suggest a number of significant considerations in relation to the role of contemporary design, stimulating a consideration on the interrelated topics and not necessarily confined in a unique specified disciplinary environment.
